KARL LAGRANDS GRAVE AND WALTERS CASKET, 1999-03-09 (photo)

Fresh flowers were placed at the headstone of Karl LaGrand by his foster mother Betty Barstow at the state prison cemetary March 8, during the burial ceremony for Karl's brother Walter, whose casket lies in the background. Minister L. Ignacio Gameros, of the Diocese of Tucson, Arizona, reads a prayer. Walter, who was executed in the gas chamber March 3 for the murder of a bank manager in Marana, Arizona in 1982, was buried next Karl who was executed by lethal injection for the same crime on February 24. The LaGrands are buried with approximately 300 other prisoners who have died or have been executed at the prison since 1910. JT/HB
