John Bull takes a look at Brest (France). Cartoon, an enormous John Bull (icon of the British nation), dressed as a sailor, in a boat, representing the power of the British fleet, is leaning towards the French coast defended by a row of ships anchored in front of the French port, in reference to the blockade of Brest (1803), which John Bull sees as “a breakfast”, in contrast, a Tiny Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) in one of the anchored ships expresses his hope that this giant, capable of swallowing his entire fleet, will not see it. Colourful etching, published by Roberts Middlemore in June 1803, probably by George Woodward (1760-1809).
