Image description

Initially an illustrator of antiquities, Sopwith took up land and mineral surveying, and subsequently described himself as a civil engineer working as a railway surveyor. His commissions included this (with Richard Grainger (1797-1861)) unsuccessful attempt to build a railway terminus at Elswick near Newcastle. He was later involved with George Stephenson (1781-1848) and Sir William Cubitt (1785-1861) in the creation of the French railway network. Engraved by W. Collard.
