Home of a rebel sharpshooter, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 3 July 1863. The Devil's Den was the scene of bitter fighting during the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. One of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War, over 50,000 men were killed or wounded during three days of fighting. Photograph from an album entitled 'Canada and the United States.1867' by John Downes Rochfort, who toured all the major Civil War sites in 1867. Some of the photographs he purchased en route have since become some of that war's best known images. Previously, war had been portrayed as a series of heroic tableaux; these photographs revealed its realities for the first time. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
