The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war to be covered comprehensively by both film and still photography. This was the result of improved technology in both photographic equipment and printing techniques. After early defeats, the British forces, reinforced by Lords Roberts and Kitchener went on the offensive in 1900. Bloemfontein, capital of the Orange Free State fell without a shot on 13th March, and by June Pretoria and Johannesburg in the Transvaal were also in British hands. The war continued for another two years however, as the Boers harrassed the numerically superior British and Empire troops with guerrilla tactics. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
