Little Round Top was the scene of bitter fighting during the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. One of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War, over 50,000 men were killed or wounded during three days of fighting. Fought between 1860 and 1865, the American Civil War saw the Northern Union or Federal forces fighting successfully to prevent the Southern Confederacy from leaving the United States of America to form their own country. In total some 558,052 soldiers were killed in what was America's bloodiest war.
