Image description

Gettysburg - 3rd Day, Culps Hill...', Pennysylvania, 3 July 1863. Albumen print of doctors with dead bodies on the battlefield at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Culp's Hill was on the extreme right flank of the Union line, and was the scene of fierce fighting. The decisive battle of the American Civil War, Gettysburg was also one of the bloodiest, with over 50,000 men killed or wounded during three days of fighting. General Robert E Lee's Confederate army fought the Union army of the Potomac under General Meade. The Union army lost 23,000 men and the Confederates up to 28,000, marking the end of Lee's planned invasion of the north. The American Civil War saw the Northern Union or Federal forces fighting successfully to prevent the Southern Confederacy from leaving the United States of America to form their own country. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
