Aachen was captured by the Americans on 21 October 1944 as the first major German city. The news came as a shock to the German population, which has just realized that the war had reached the Reich borders. Our photo shows a German infantryman with the 'stovepipe', the Panzerschreck (anti-tank rocket launcher), a new weapon for direct tank combat, who has chosen a temporary position in the cellar hole of a wine cellar in the streets of Aachen.
