Explosion on the burning USS Congress during the Battle of Hampton Roads on 8 March, 1862. American Civil War. After the crew of USS Congress surrendered, a battery continued to fire on CSS Virginia, provoking her to fire hot shot and incendiary ammunition at the prone ship.
