Contraceptives, Female Cervical cap, 2000. Made by Prentif, this female contraceptive device is filled with a small amount of spermicide and inserted into the woman's vagina at least 20-30 minutes before sexual intercourse. Once inserted, it forms a tight seal around the cervix, blocking the opening to the uterus and preventing sperm from fertilising an egg. It must be left in place at least six hours after sexual intercourse has occured, but should not be left inserted for more than two days at a time (due to possible odour or irritation and possible association with an increased risk of toxic shock syndrome). ©SSPL/Science Museum
