Commando raid, 1942 A photograph of a scene from the film 'The Day Will Dawn' showing British commandos storming ashore at a Norwegian village, taken by an unknown photographer on 22 March, 1942. With only limited resources available at this point in the war the British Army could only launch small raids against the German forces occupying mainland Europe. Of limited overall effect they were important, however, in reassuring the British that their forces were continuing to fight. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs.
