CARMEN SOTO PREPARES FOOD FOR HIS FAMILY DURING COLD NIGHT, 2000-12-19 (photo)

Carmen Soto, 50, prepares food for her family December 19, 2000, in the village of Santiago Xalizintla, just 7.5 miles (12.07km) from Mexico's volcano Popocatepetl which continues to to hurl molten rocks into the sky. Mexican authorities have expanded an emergency zone to 12.5 miles (20.12km) from 7.5 miles, fearing that a roughly 3,000-foot long glacier on the volcano's western face could become dislodged by molten rock and cause massive mudslildes. The Soto family are among local residents living near the mountan who prefer to stay in their homes and risk possible mudslides, despite the evacuation efforts by authorities. DA/MMR
