Astronomical chart mapping the stars in the northern hemisphere, c 1870-1888. Hand-drawn star map in glazed frame of the northern heavens prepared by Richard Anthony Proctor (1837-1888). Proctor who graduated from Cambridge University in 1860, studied law but gave up this career path to follow his interest in astronomy and mathematics. He soon established himself as a prolific writer of popular astronomy books along with star charts and maps of the heavens. This map was probably produced with the intention of it being used in one of his published works. In 1887 Proctor left England and moved to Florida in America, but died shortly afterwards in New York of yellow fever. Such was the popularity of his work that some of it remained in print well into the twentieth century. ©SSPL/Science Museum
