Aquila parrish (L) is passed by Nicchio Dario Colage' at the San Martino turn during the Palio of Siena August 16. The centuries old bareback dash around Siena's square is run twice a year and dates back to 1224. Animal lovers have often referred to the race as medieval butchery since as many as 40 thoroughbreds have been put down since 1967 due to injuries sustained in the event.
