Apsley Pellatt, English glass manufacturer, 1854-1866. Studio portrait photograph by Maull and Polyblank of Apsley Pellatt (1791-1863). Pellatt joined his father's glass company, Pellatt and Green, in London, at the age of 21, taking over the business following his father's death in 1826. In 1819 he took out a patent for 'crystallo ceramie' - the process of encasing a medallion in glass, later known as 'Cameo Incrustation'. He wrote a book about this process entitled 'Memoir on the Origin, Progress and Improvement of Glass Manufacture including... Glass Incrustations' in 1821, enlarging and revising it under the title 'Curiosities of Glass Making' in 1849. Dimensions: 200mm x 150mm. ©SSPL/Science Museum
