An army truck with soldiers and policemen patrols the Athletes' Village, September 1, in the Alexandra Township. The neighbourhood east of Johannesburg is where hundreds of athletes from around Africa are going to be housed during the 7th All Africa Games. Once the games are over, the village is to be given to residents of Alexander, many of whom currently squat in shacks made up of cardboard and plastic. The games begin on September 10 and continue until the 19th. It is the first time South Africa is hosting the games since the demise of Apartheid in 1994. JN/JRE
