A process worker at ICI Ardil Technical department Inspects Ardil fibre, 1956. Ardil is a protein fibre with a short life span which ICI began making in 1946 at the Ardeer plant. It was the result of the search for a man made fibre that would have a structure and properties similar to animal derived fibres. However Ardil soon hit commercial problems caused by the price and supply of raw materials. It was produced for only six years and ceased production in 1957.
