Image description

A crane lifts the bridge of the liner Britannic, breakers yard, Inverkeithing. Wards Inverkeithing yard was said to be one of the best equipped worldwide and could dismantle ships of over 50,000 tons. The Britannic was built in Belfast by Harland and Wolf and launched in 1929. She was notable for her diesel engines when liners were traditionally powered by steam. Her sumptuous interiors were Art Deco. A Cunard White Star liner, the Britannic mainly sailed on the Liverpool to New York route and made her final trip in 1960 before being sold as scrap to the British Iron and Steel Company. Photograph taken in 1961 by Walter Nurnberg (1907-1991) who transformed industrial photography after WWII using film studio lighting techniques. Photographie ©SSPL/NMeM/Walter Nurnberg
