Image description

A pair of David's deer wade through a small lake in an animal park south of Beijing November 15. David's deer is named after Pere David, a French Catholic priest and naturalist who first recorded the existence of the unique deer in China in 1865. The protected animal was native to China until the early years of the 20th century. In 1985, the Marquess of Tavistock of England sent 20 of the rare animals to Beijing where they are now being raised. NB/FY/KM
