Former army chief and retired General Augusto Pinochet wipes his nose during an academic conference in Santiago, September 11. The 82-year-old, now life-long senator, overthrew Socialist President Salvador Allende in a coup on September 11, 1973, that resulted in Allende's death and 17 years of dictatorship. The anniversary holds special meaning, as this is the last time Pinochet's coup will be a national holiday. The Chilean Senate, supported by Pinochet, unanimously approved a bill to erase the September 11 holiday from the calendar and replace it with "National Unity Day" on the first Monday in September beginning in 1999.
