Empuries also known as Ampurias, Girona Province, Catalonia, Spain. Gate leading through the walls to the main street of the Roman town. To the right of the gate is the carving of an erect penis. Such symbols could perhaps bring luck to the city and to those passing through the gate, or could have been associated with the cult of Priapus. Empuries was founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC as a trading town and later became part of the Roman empire.
