Volunteers of Women Coordination Committee pack condoms for distribution among prostitutes in Sonagachi redlight area of the eastern Indian city of Calcutta April 2 as part of its HIV intervention programme. The committee is an organisation of prostitutes which runs a cooperative for the sexworkers. It also looks after the education of the children of the prostitutes and vocational training for the retired sex workers. Less than 5 percent of the 21,000 prostitutes in the twin city of Calcutta and Howrah are infected with AIDS.
