Image description

This view off the coast of Cornwall was probably painted from a covered boat, acting as a kind of studio. Red reflections from the buoy on the water vary the blue-grey shades of the ocean in the foreground of the picture. Opaque watercolour has been used to achieve the strong colour of the scene. Charles Hemy concentrated on sea subjects throughout his career. He lived in the North East for the early part of his life, moving to London in 1871, and then settling in Cornwall.
