Hemy, Charles Napier Warm yellow reflections and silvery ripples gleam on the water in this scene. Sails and ships create dramatic dark shapes against the purple night sky. Fishermen are bringing a coble (small fishing boat) into port at North Shields. On the right is the large black shape of the 'Wellesley', with only a single small mast up. This was an ex-navy ship moored on the river and used to train boys as sailors. Charles Hemy spent his early career in the North East, and was an extremely accomplished painter of sea subjects.
