‘H.M. 53rd Foot’, 1845 (c). Watercolour by Ensign Bethune Donald Grant, 35th Bengal Light Infantry, 1845 (c). The 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot arrived in India in 1844 and went on to fight in the 1st Sikh War (1845-1846) at at Aliwal (1846) and Sobraon (1846). The 53rd was also present at the decisive Battle of Gujerat (1849) during the Second Sikh War (1848-1849). Donald Bethune Grant (1827-1854) was the son of a surgeon, John Grant and Elizabeth Nicholson Agnes Hayes. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the 35th Bengal Native Infantry. He died in Agra on 30 November 1854.
