Image description

Hortense was the daughter of Napoleon's first wife, Josephine. Napoleon arranged for her to marry his brother, Louis Bonaparte, and she became Queen of Holland in 1806 when he became Louis I. Their marriage was not a success, and Hortense was unhappy in Holland, preferring to live in Paris, where she had her portrait painted by Girodet, the leading artist of the day.
