Image description

Napoleon Bonaparte (1759-1821), learning of the victory of Horatio Nelson (1758-1805), swears on his sword to root the English out of the face of the earth. A triumphalist cartoon mocking Napoleon's campaign (expedition) in Egypt, with reference to the Battle of the Nile (or of Aboukir, 1798), he is ridiculed by his extravagant uniform, contrasting with the rider who appears behind him, a descendant of a camel, who looks with surprise and fear at his commander, who draws his bloody saber and Mark 'Equality', parodying David's painting 'The Oath of the Horaces'. Represented as an icon of revolutionary principles and as an Eastern despot (with the Islamic crescent on his hat) and oriental tents in the background. Etching in colors, published by H.Humphrey on December 8, 1798, by James Gillray (1757-1815).
