On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "From New Bond Street towards Seneschal Lane. Matt Cain's wall cut away to enable passage of a single cart.16th century gold coins found here. The Alderman and Councillors were walking close at hand, and wept like anything , to see what artists eyes demand. 'If this were only cleared away', they said, 'it would be grand!' Apologies to Lewis Carroll. I have often seen artists (standing at left of view) blocking this bit in on sketch pads. I saw two last summer, visitors, and I am glad to think that this quaint bit is reprieved, if only temporarily. (5.7.35.all gone for months past)."
