On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Entrance to Spittal's Court, off Almshouse Lane. Two more cottages were beyond the gateway. All now gone, including Spittal's big house, of which a window is visible L. Centre, over the arch. [See also] Spittal's Court, at rear of Spittal's House in Seneschal Lane, and entered from the Almshouse Lane by an alley-way: Three cottages, one seen outside the gate the other two being within & hiddden until the demolitions, when they first became visible."
