Belgian and British troops stand guard in front of the Menin Gate, a World War One memorial, during a ceremony commemorating the 75th anniversary of its construction in Ypres on July 24, 2002. The Menin Gate is a massive memorial bearing the names of 55,000 British Commonwealth soldiers killed in the war whose bodies were never found. Three major battles were fought around the town of Ypres in southwest Belgium. Allied armies halted twice the advance of German troops to the North Sea and then launched a counter-attack in 1917 in a third battle, known as the battle of Passchendaele. REUTERS/Francois Lenoir THR
