Image description

Illuminated miniature from Book of Hours (W.170 folio 174v) influenced by the Master of Guillebert de Mets. Wilgefortis is a female saint with a large beard (in legend she prayed to be made repulsive to avoid marriage, for which her father had her crucified). Name may derive from Latin "virgo fortis" (strong virgin). In England Uncumber, Dutch Ontkommer (escaper), German Kümmernis (grief), Italian Liberata, Spanish Librada and French Débarras (riddance). Venerated by women wanting to be liberated ("disencumbered") from abusive husbands.
