Reform Bill carried, 1831. One of the great landmarks in the struggle for the reform of the franchise, was the Reform Bill, which passed the House of Commons "after a warfare which for animosity and duration was unparalleled in our Parliamentary history." There was extraordinary enthusiasm in the House, the cheers of the members being caught up by the waiting crowds in the streets. London was illuminated, and as the news spread through the country the bells were set ringing everywhere. The rejection of the Bill by the Lords provoked serious rioting at Derby, Nottingham and Bristol, and the Bill ultimately became law in 1832. Illustration for one a set of cards on Historical London, issued by Hignett's Cigarettes in 1926.
