Hoisting the Ensign. Official regulations decree that the White Ensign shall be flown by HM ships continuously when at sea, but only by day when in harbour. Thus, when in harbour, the Ceremony of Hoisting the Ensign takes place each morning - during the summer at 8 am and in the winter at 9 am. A guard and the ship's band assemble on the quarter-deck, and at the appointed hour a bugle call is sounded. All ratings stand to attention and the officers salute; then, while the National Anthem is being played, the Ensign is slowly hoisted. The parade of the guard and band was instituted by Lord St Vincent in 1797.
