Image description

The triumphal chariot. From that large woodcuts, which Emperor Maximilian let himself build for his posthumous reputation, and what is well known under the name "The triumphal procession of Emperor Maximilian", the part drawn by Albrecht Dürer, is considered to be the essential element. Description: According to the dignity of the emperor the carriage is carried by four virtues which denote the four wheels: Gloria, Dignitas, Magnificentia, Honor. On each of the four corners a purple dressed girl is standing as an allegory of the four cardinal virtues of the emperor: Justitia , Fortitudo, Prudentia and Temperance, which hold in common a chain of laurel wreaths, representing further honors and virtues, in their hands. The canopy, supported by a powerful spiral, shows in the way of a rebus the sun and the imperial eagle and is accompanied by the inscription: "Quod in coelis (sol) - hoc in terra (caesar)" = "What in heaven the sun, is on the earth the Emperor". On the carriage Kaiser Max is enthroned, the miter crown on his head, with the palm and the scepter in his hands, and behind him is a Victoria with the victory wreath. Before him the members of his family sitting in order: his first wife Mary of Burgundy, and their daughter Margaret (since 1513 regent of the Netherlands), then his son Philip the Fair, and his wife, Joan the Mad, next to their sons: Archduke Charles V and Archduke Ferdinand I and finally the sisters of these two princes: Eleonore (born 1498), Isabella (born 1501), Maria (born in 1507), Katharina Posthuma (born 1507). Accompanied and guarded is the carriage by the allegories: Fidentia, Securitas, Gravitas and Perseverantia, but controlled by reason (Ratio), which holds the reins Nobilitas and Potentia in both hands. As leaders of the twelve horses (six carriages) twelve slightly pursed girls are added, each of which holding the bridle with one hand, and with the other a laurel wreath in which the person's name is always delineated. Pen and ink drawing in brown ink, on four sheets pasted together, and executed in watercolors. Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528); Upper German School Der Triumphwagen Der Triumphwagen. Wien, Gerlach & Schenk. Verlag für Kunst und Kunstgewerbe.
