Image description

Saint Simeon (or Simon) the Leper; in the Gospel of Matthew Jesus visits his house at Bethany, the home also of Lazarus, brother of Martha and Mary; later he travelled to France with Mary and Lazarus, who by tradition was the first bishop of Marseilles; inside right wing of the 'Jabach Altarpiece'; the central panel of this has been lost and only the wings have survived; the outside left panels depict the story of Job (now in Frankfurt at the Städelsches KunstInstitut and the right panels depict two musicians, one whom is a self portrait of the artist (now at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne); the two inside panels depict saints (now in Munich at the Alte Pinakothek); triptych probably commissioned by Frederick the Wise (1463-1525) for his palace at Wittenberg to commemorate the end of the plague in 1503; called 'Jabach' altarpiece because later owned by the celebrated art collector, Everhard Jabach (1618-95);
