Edward Dayes travelled around Britain making landscape sketches, which he later composed into w/c views. It is likely that the artist only made a detailed sketch of the castle itself, and the scene was mostly composed from imagination in the studio. The picture is painted in the 18th century style of pale washes of grey, blue, green and brown. This is one of many pictures by Edward Dayes that were produced as engravings. Prints of ancient buildings and views were popular at this time. Dayes was appointed Designer to the Duke of York;
