Aymara Indians from the Island of the Sun use levers and ramps, with the help from Bolivian sailors, to load a nine-ton boulder onto the Qala Yampu reed boat on the shore of Lake Titicaca near Copacabana, September 9, 2002. The Qala Yampu project, funded by the University of Pennsylvania with participation from the San Andres University in La Paz, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Universities of Wisconsin and Colorado, is testing the theory that large building stones may have been transported by ancient reed boats, from quarries on the Titicaca shore, 90 kilometers across to build the Tiwanaku pyramids on the Bolivian altiplano.
