The sailing ships in this little picture form a diagonal line leading to the monument on the hill above Edinburgh. The composition follows one of the artist's favourite formats of a shaded foreground corner contrasted with sun on the water in the distance. This contrast is repeated in the sky, leaving the monument outlined against white cloud. John Wilson Carmichael mainly painted sea subjects on the North East coast, only travelling north to Scotland on a few occasions;
