On 15 June 1648 the signing of the Treaty of Münster in the town hall marked an end of the 80 year war between the Dutch Republic and Spain. The Dutch delegates are at the left, the Spanish ones at the right. The Thirty Years War at the end of the Eighty Years' War, an armed revolt under the leadership of Protestant William of Orange when the Dutch struggled to gain independence from Spanish rule under the Catholic Philip II.
