Building A Caisson For Mulberry Harbour, 1944 (chalk, wash on paper)

Creator: Bone, David Muirhead (1876-1953) A concrete caisson, used to construct a Mulberry Harbour for D-Day, being built by workers at London Docks, 1944. The caisson is covered with scaffolding, and cranes can be seen in the background as well as a barrage balloon. Sir Muirhead Bone was the first official war artist under the British War Memorials Committee scheme in the First World War, and the War Artists Advisory Committee in the Second World War. He was a qualified architect and a trustee of Tate Gallery, Imperial War Museums and National Gallery.
