William Beilby (1740-1819) Busy Cottage, 1774 Watercolour and pencil Height 10.5 x Width 16 cm TWCMS : M733 The original Busy Cottage gave its name to a small group of buildings in Jesmond Dene, Newcastle. They were sited near where Pets' Corner is now. This picture shows the area before the Busy Cottage Ironworks was built in about 1780. The watercolour is part of a group of sketches of North-East and London scenes painted by William Beilby in 1774. Beilby was a decorator of expensive glassware, and a drawing teacher. He left Newcastle in about 1778 for Battersea in London
