‘Horse Artillery in Action’, 1857 circa. Coloured lithograph from 'The Campaign in India 1857-58 from drawings made during the eventful period of the Gr', a series of 26 coloured lithographs by William Simpson, E Walker and others, after G F Atkinson, published by Day and Son, 1857-1858. Horse artillery had the task of giving fire support to the cavalry. With its soldiers all riding into battle on horses, wagons or limbers, the horse artillery teams were able to keep up with the fast moving mounted units. The East India Company’s Bengal and Bombay Armies both formed their own horse artillery units on similar lines to the British Army’s Royal Horse Artillery.
