Haymaking usually took place in late June or July at a time when fine weather was expected for a few days. The grass was cut and left to dry in the fields before it was collected. This summertime view of horses working in a landscape is typical of many pictures painted by the Newcastle artist John Atkinson. Sunlight reflects off the white horse in the middle of this scene, drawing the viewer's eye. The slightly off-centre placing of the horse gives a sense of movement;
