So it takes a fairly stable atmosphere to keep these crystals parallel to the horizon. Lunar halo. The ice crystals in the cirrus decompose the lunar light (in fact, the solar light reflected by the lunar surface) as small prisms and can give rise to a large coloured circle. A paraselene consists of light spots located on the left and right at the height of the Moon. Austria, January 2016. A light pillar is created by the reflection of light on the horizontal face of ice cristals. So, a quiet atmosphere is needed in order that this cristals stay parallel to the horizon. They bend light at a 22 degree angle, which creates a halo that is 44 degrees in diameter
