Grice's Clarendon Hotel, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Next print much better FW 96. This for personal section? Route 2. looking back at the S side of New Bond street, in centre, below the lamp is what was, over sixty years back, the Mahogany Bar Tavern on the corner of Harris' Lane. A century ago, most of the houses in the old town, if they were not actually Inns or Taverns, sold ale. Mr. S. Harris, (hence Harris' Lane), father of High Bailiff Harris, ran a drapers shop where the Clarendon is now, (same building,) on the Quay. The Mahogany Bar was at its rear. And in 1845 Mr. Harris, draper, also held a wine and spirit licence. (See Quiggins 1845 Guide and Directory.) Harris [...?] on Clarendon as entry via Harris Lane."
