Image description

This tombstone shows Victor reclining on a highly decorated couch being served a drink by a slave. Victor came from North Africa and was the slave of a soldier from Spain. Rectangular sandstone tombstone dedicated to Victor with carving and inscription. The top was found in 1881 and has been burnt. The rest was found in 1885. The stone has dowel holes at sides and bottom which fixed it to a monumental base and dado. Two fluted pilasters support a pediment carrying in the centre a lion's head with a ring in its mouth, in either spandrel is a bust with features now worn away. The deceased in tunic and long robe draped in folds over his left shoulder and terminating in a tassel reclines on an upholstered couch with baluster legs, in his right hand he holds a bunch of leaves, in his left a cup and rests his left elbow on a cushion. Below the couch stands his page, with damaged face, holding a vessel towards him. The shrine enclosing the scene is richly carved as if it were wood rather than stone.
