Image description

Engraving by Alfred Jones, after Richard Caton Woodville's 1848 painting 'War News from Mexico' A group of men outside the American Hotel react to news of the Mexican-American War (1846–1848). The end of it brought annexation of California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and parts of Colorado, with decisions about which would be slave states and which free. These men could vote for their congressional representatives but the woman and African-Americans could not.
