Image description

The “Committee for Law and Order” convened the local community in Zurich's Muensterhof on September 27, 1980. However, a tear gaspetarde was used, which made the “pilgrims” cry. The police did not appear. The 'youth riots' in Zurich began on May 30, 1980 with protests against the subsidization of the opera house, as millions are spent on the 'established' but little on 'alternative' culture. The 'opera house riot' was the prelude to a wave of violent clashes, in which the young people were met with complete incomprehension on the part of civil society. The Autonomous Youth Centre (AJZ) became the focal point of the movement and was made available to young people from 28 June 1980. After a search and arrest, the AJZ was closed on 5 September 1980. As a result, serious unrest broke out and the building was occupied.
