Image description

As a preventive measure following the chemical accident at the Icmesa chemical plant near Seveso, Italy, the Health and Welfare Directorate of the Canton of Ticino ordered air samples along the border with Italy, taken on 9 August 1976. On 10 July 1976, a reactor explosion occurred at Icmesa, a subsidiary of Givaudan, on the outskirts of the municipality of Meda near Milan, during which a dioxin cloud was released. This poison gas cloud spread with the wind over a wide area and settled in the neighbouring municipality of Seveso.
