On 18 November 1960, the University of Basel celebrates the 501st anniversary of its founding in St. Martin's Church. During the ceremony, three personalities will be awarded an honorary doctorate: the cellist August Wenzinger from Basel, for his work as a scientist and performing artist; Josef Remigius Belmont, Schwyz, Dutch consul in Basel, in recognition of his research into Indian art; and Gottlieb Spoerri, Glarus, in recognition of his interpretation of the Bible and his outstanding leadership of the female deaconry.
